Relevance Really Matters
The sermon today in church was about relevance. The thesis was that relevance really matters. The pastor explained through analogy and experience how this indeed was true. I was thinking to myself, well yeah, of course relevance matters. He went on to speak to how often we get caught up in things that didn’t really matter, in things that weren’t relevant.
As I work to build my businesses, how often do I get caught up in that which doesn’t really matter or if it does it’s on the fringes? It is all too easy to spend time in the wrong part of the 80/20 rule. Will my taking a “fast” moment to look at a sites traffic help me to make any more money. No. Stats are important, but only to the extent you look to learn from them. Is it interesting that I get more searches coming from MSN than Google on one of my sites? Yep. But until I’m ready to spend the time to figure out why (or how I can best use resources to capitalize on it), it is not productive time.
Did you know that people are still using Windows 98 and even 95? Really, there are. How does this impact anything that I’ll chose to do. You’ve got it, it doesn’t. It’s just one of those interesting facts that can sidetrack us from what we should be focusing on. In my relationship with my father, should I be focusing on forcing him to acknowledge that he has slipped mentally? Why am I wasting our time on this? If he doesn’t know it already - well then, things are worse than I thought and I better be focusing on that.
Relevance. Focus on what matters and is important and what we can do to make a difference. What will help us to be better off financially? Will tweaking the website or producing more content that our visitors wish to view make the larger difference? What will make our personal relationships stronger and closer? Will a smile to our spouse or an unhappy grumble yield the best outcome? Does the weight of that grudge that you carry around on your back make your life more enjoyable?
How can we make the most of our time on this earth?
Be Relevant.
